2006 Boushey Syrah - Top 100 Washington Wine Pick for 2009!

Paul Gregutt, author of Seattle Times' "Wine Advisor", has a sobering task - to taste wines from over 650 Washington wineries, take careful notes, publish his results, and do it all over again. His results for the Top 100 Washington Wine Picks for 2009, published on November 23, placed Coeur d'Alene Cellars' 2006 Boushey Vineyard Syrah at number 73. This small winery sources all of its fruit from Washington and is in good company with some of the top wineries in the country. Kimber Gates, owner and manager of Coeur d'Alene Cellars' Winery says, "I'm impressed with Gregutt's approach to tasting wine. He is open-minded and looks for the best wines at the best prices. I'm proud to be a part of his list."
Gregutt also reviews and rates wines for the Wine Enthusiast, which earlier this year rated the 2006 Boushey Vineyard Syrah at 91 points. Gregutt's review stated, "The Boushey vineyard's Syrahs are always a joy, and this once again is at the top of the heap among all five of the 2006 Syrahs from Coeur d'Alene Cellars. It simply has more grip, more spice, more weight and complexity than the others. A relatively cool site, Boushey ripens Syrah to un-jammy blue fruit flavors, with strong elements of earth, herb and smoked meat character. Careful barrel aging rounds it off with a mocha finish." This rating follows the 92 points that the 2006 Boushey Vineyard Syrah scored in the Wine Spectator earlier this year.
Dick Boushey's fruit makes up 100 percent of this award winning Syrah. Warren Schutz, winemaker for Coeur d'Alene Cellars' Winery says, "Grower Dick Boushey's expert management leads to moderate yields and small berried fruit. The vineyard is at 1300 feet elevation in the hills south of Grandview, higher than most vineyards in the state. The fruit has intense aromatics, concentrated fruit flavors, and gentle tannins."
